ABS Fitness Center is an office gym with an app that allows employees to enter, book classes, and hire trainers. Our goal was to identify and solve usability issues through user interviews.

Background

To improve the user experience of ABS Fitness Center's app, we interviewed 27 employees who use the gym regularly.

The center was founded less than five years ago and everything, including the app, was created quickly. We conducted research interviews to uncover any issues with usability.

Design Process

We asked 27 users about the following questions:

a. How many times do you go to the gym per week?

b. What kind of workout do you usually do at the gym? (Multiple choice)

c. Do you find any features in the ABS app to be inconvenient?
There were two main issues being mentioned frequently:

People use various apps for workouts.

After using other apps to contact personal trainers and record workout lists, users then enter the ABS app to access the facility.

“Switching apps during workouts is annoying!”

"I don't want to add my trainer on social media, but have to since ABS app doesn't allow communication."

"I rarely attend group classes; I prefer keeping a workout list on an app or on paper and referring to it during exercise."

The user interface is unappealing.

Interface matters. The outdated look discourages people from exploring new features.

"Downloaded app only for entering fitness center; UI is ugly."

"Booking classes on app seemed like too much work."

"App for people who exercise but style/layout are lifeless.”

Limitations

Due to limited resources, we will focus on combining functions and improving app visuals. Other features, such as purchasing personal trainer services or group class functions, will be discussed later.
